Sumter Behavioral Health Services is a substance use treatment center located in Sumter, South Carolina. We are at the crossroads to a better future for you and all residents of Sumter County. Here at Sumter BHS, we believe that there is a path forward for everyone. If you or someone you love is suffering from a substance use disorder, we are here to help you find the path toward healing.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
Our intensive outpatient program (IOP) allows clients to come into the facility for treatment multiple times a week while still living in the comfort of their own homes and being able to work or look after children. IOP treatment offers a minimum of nine hours of treatment every week for clients, the majority of which takes place in a group setting.
Group therapy allows clients to practice social skills, develop healthy relationships, feel less isolated overall, and learn from each other's experiences. Group therapy is an important part of transitioning to life after a substance use disorder.
IOP is a good option for people who have completed a residential program but still need a lot of help at this stage in their recovery. IOP is also an excellent option for people who want to begin the process of recovery from a substance use disorder but cannot commit to full-time residential treatment due to family or work commitments.
Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)
In medication-assisted treatment (MAT), we use medications approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to holistically treat substance use disorders. MAT also includes appropriate counseling and behavioral therapy.
During intake and assessment, one of our trained clinicians will discuss the options available based on each individual’s needs. Potential clients will then meet with a nurse practitioner to assess their medical and physical health to determine eligibility. We do provide financial assistance for those that qualify.
Adolescent and Family Services (AFS)
AFS is a family therapy program designed to heal the families of children (ages 6-21) who are at risk of being removed from the home due to family discord, problems at school, substance misuse, or legal involvement.
AFS helps families create an environment that leads to positive adolescent behavior patterns by offering services designed to:
- strengthen parenting skills and improve family functioning
- provide alcohol and drug misuse services
- improve life skills
- decrease behavior problems
- reduce juvenile offenses and school-related problems
AFS includes a full assessment at the beginning of the program, followed by counseling that can include individual, group, or family sessions.
We also offer adolescent outpatient services that specialize in treatment for adolescents (ages 12-18 years) struggling with substance use or other behavioral problems. Treatment options can include individual, group, and/or family therapy; and/or substance misuse counseling.
Intervention Services
Alcohol and Drug Safety Action Program (ADSAP)
South Carolina state law requires that anyone whose driver’s license has been suspended as the result of a driving under the influence (DUI) conviction, administrative license revocation (ALR), or zero tolerance suspension to complete an ADSAP program before he or she can apply to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety (SCDPS) for reinstatement of their driving privileges.
Sumter Behavioral Health is certified to provide these services. ADSAP services are designed to work with offenders to reduce the number of crashes that result in death, injury, property damage, and the number of individuals that repeat being charged with DUI-related offenses.
Requirements for ADSAP enrollment are:
- 10-year driving record (obtain from Department of Motor Vehicles within 30 days of scheduled ADSAP appointment)
- Valid picture ID (driver’s license, state ID, passport)
- Social Security card
- Minimum fee for ADSAP is $500, however, the total cost is based on the result of a financial assessment.
(We accept cash, money order, Visa, debit, or cashier’s check. Sorry, no personal checks or American Express)
Pre-Trial Intervention (PTI)
Pre-Trial Intervention (PTI) is a program for first-time, non-violent drug offenders. This program allows these people to avoid a court date and a criminal record by allowing them to receive addiction treatment instead of jail time. This is done in partnership with the Third Circuit Solicitor's Office.
Once a person has completed PTI, they will be referred back to the solicitor's office to begin the process of eliminating their record.
The PTI program cost is a minimum of $400.
What’s needed on the first appointment:
- Valid picture ID (driver’s license, state ID, passport)
- Social Security card
- $200 for the enrollment, intake, and initial drug screen fees.
(We accept cash, money order, Visa, debit, or cashier’s check. Sorry, no personal checks or American Express)
Offender-Based Intervention (OBI)/Court
Offender-Based Intervention (OBI) is a six-month substance use educational treatment program for people with an alcohol- or substance-related charge other than a DUI. After treatment, the people in this program must remain drug-free without other legal violations for an additional six months. After this, their record will be eliminated by the Third Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
The OBI conditional discharge program cost is a minimum of $400.
What’s needed on the first appointment:
- Valid picture ID (driver’s license, state ID, passport)
- Social Security card
- $185 for the biopsychosocial assessment and initial drug screen.
(We accept cash, money order, Visa, debit, or cashier’s check. Sorry, no personal checks or American Express)
Probation, Parole, and Pardon (PPP)
This program is intended to help people with a criminal record at either the state or federal level involving drug use to successfully meet the conditions of their probation or parole. We provide alcohol or drug treatment, life skills training, and drug/alcohol education.
People are typically referred to this program by their probation or parole officer.
What’s needed on the first appointment:
- Valid picture ID (driver’s license, state ID, passport)

Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) Services
The U.S. Department of Transportation has a program for Alcohol and Drug testing that boasts strict guidelines and regulations for its employees. When an employee tests positive for a substance or is suspected of having an alcohol or drug problem, they are referred to an SAP - Substance Abuse Professional - who renders a full evaluation and any treatment or continued drug testing recommendations. Sumter Behavioral Health has an SAP on staff to assist in the return to duty process for the above-mentioned employees. This helps facilitate intervention and possible treatment while maintaining a positive relationship with the referring employer.
