Evidence-based Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Treatment

At Sumter Behavioral Health Services, we provide treatment options for people living with substance use disorders (often referred to as addictions) involving opioids, alcohol, methamphetamine, benzodiazepines, and other drugs.

As a country, we continue to struggle with the opioid epidemic, which has led to rising numbers of overdose deaths. We also face an unfortunate number of lives lost to methamphetamine as well as to long-term and short-term alcohol misuse.

At Sumter, we deliver proven treatment options for the full range of substance use disorders with local care for local problems.

Opioid Use Disorder

Through the use of medication-assisted treatment (MAT), Sumter provides ongoing, evidence-based recovery services that have proven effective in reducing overdoses, withdrawal symptoms, and opioid use.

Opioid use disorder is defined as a person being unable to stop the use of opioids, such as morphine, fentanyl, heroin, oxycodone, or hydrocodone, despite the negative consequences that come with continued use.

In recent studies, we have seen the impact of opioids on counties throughout the state. In Sumter, far too many lives were lost due to opioid overdose in recent years.

In total as a state in 2017, 1,001 lives were lost to a drug overdose. Of those, 75% were due to opioids. Along with the rest of the country, South Carolina has seen the number of deaths continue to rise in the past couple of years.

At Sumter Behavioral Health Services, we’re fighting this trend by offering MAT. The need for MAT is determined upon intake into the program. We only use medications approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, along with counseling and behavioral therapies, to assist you in the process of reaching long-term recovery.

Alcohol Use Disorder

In Sumter County, there are more than 1,000 hospitalizations each year due to alcohol use per 100,000 residents. That’s a rate that is increasing with time. Sumter BHS is committed to providing treatment that reduces the number of county residents negatively impacted by alcohol.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) affects millions of Americans every year. In 2021, 17.4% of South Carolinians were found to drink excessively throughout the year.

On top of alcohol use disorder treatment, we also provide education and treatment services for those charged with driving under the influence (DUI), boating under the influence (BUI), and related offenses through the Alcohol and Drug Safety Action Program (ADSAP).

Thousands of South Carolinians are killed or injured each year in alcohol-related or other drug-related crashes. Our ADSAP services work with offenders to reduce the number of crashes that result in death, injury, property damage, and the number of people that repeat being charged with DUI-related offenses.

Stimulant Use Disorder (Methamphetamine, Cocaine, etc.)

In 2018, 242 people died from overdosing on psychostimulants like methamphetamine in South Carolina. Seven of those lives lost came from our humble community.

We provide methamphetamine treatment with an eye on remembering the lives lost and preventing further loss.

Commonly, depression causes feelings of sadness, emptiness, and irritability. These feelings can result in changes to the mind and body that can impact daily functioning.

The signs of anxiety disorders that may require you or your loved one to reach out for treatment include excessive worry, restlessness, irritability, tension, sluggishness, sleep disturbances, and difficulty concentrating.
