High-Intensity Outpatient Program
(Formerly Known As: Partial-Hospitalization Program)
A high-intensity outpatient program (HIOP) is the most intensive level of outpatient treatment. HIOP provides rehab services to people who require a highly supportive level of care. When appropriate, it can serve as an alternative to inpatient and residential treatment in that it provides access to a similar range of relatively intensive recovery services but allows those who need daily monitoring and management to return to their home or other sober living environment outside of treatment hours.
People who may be good candidates for a HIOP include those who have significant substance use and co-occurring mental health conditions like bipolar disorder or depression, but have relatively stable home environments, reliable transportation, and a sufficient level of social support.
- HIOP lasts 4 weeks: 4 days a week (Mon-Thurs)
- There is a total of 6 hours of treatment a day consisting of 2 sessions for 3 hours each (9AM-12PM and 1PM-4PM.
- New clients begin on Monday
- If a client misses 4 group sessions, they may have to stay in the program an extra week

Key Benefits of High-Intensity Outpatient Program
- Intensive Care Without Overnights: HIOPs offer similar therapy intensity to inpatient care but allow patients to return home in the evenings, promoting independence and reducing treatment disruption.
- Structured Therapeutic Routine: Provides a consistent, structured, and safe environment, which is highly beneficial for establishing healthy routines, managing medication, and maintaining motivation.
- Effective Step-Down and Bridge Care: Serves as a vital bridge for those transitioning from inpatient psychiatric care to outpatient services, helping prevent relapse during the transition.
- Cost-Effectiveness: Generally more affordable than inpatient hospitalization because they eliminate the costs associated with overnight stays, meals, and 24-hour nursing.
- Comprehensive Care & Skills Development: Programs often include individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, and psychoeducation, focusing on developing coping skills to manage symptoms and prevent relapse.
- Peer Support and Reduced Isolation: Being in a group environment allows patients to connect with others facing similar challenges, decreasing feelings of isolation and improving social skills.
- Flexibility for Real-Life Application: Participants can continue to maintain family, social, and work/school connections, allowing them to apply coping strategies learned in treatment to their everyday lives immediately.
